In Search of Home

At Home in the West

I'm happy I was able to create this video about fall on our Montana Homestead, before the winter weather moved in to stay.  This one holds a special meaning for me, and even by husband said it was "impressive".  Once I regained consciousness, 😉 it made me more than pleased to share it with you all.  I hope you take a moment to enjoy "In Search of Home-Welcome to Cimarron".

Montana Author Wins National Literary Award

2018 Will Rogers Medallion Award Bronze Medal Winner

My first book will always have a special meaning to me. I spent nearly two years writing it, and another year and a half searching for a publisher who would consider it worthy of their publishing house.  I'm truly honored to win this prestigious national award.  I want to send a special thank you to those of you who read my blog, watch my videos, and in some way, support my work as an author and artist.

A Star is Reborn

A Star is Reborn

This is the story of an abused horse that we have adopted into our family.  He is very gentle and deserves a chance at a new life.  He's been with us about 5 weeks, and seeing the hope in his eyes brings a tear to my own.  This is a new chapter in our lives on our mountain homestead.

Snow Day! This is fall?

This is Fall on a Montana Mountain

I shouldn't be surprised we have already had two snow days this fall.  A few days ago we had some beautiful weather.  The horses were enjoying the sun, and the leaves were a bright gold. It's amazing how quickly the mountain changes.

One morning, I woke up to to see flurries, and the snow continued to accumulate all day.

Two days later, the snow had melted and the sun was out again.

 That's life in the west.

Rescuing Star- The Vet's Prognosis

***Star Update***
The vet gave Star a check up. He does have a stifle injury with severe swelling and some damage in his hip. She also found some melanoma cancer that is treatable. He has some scar tissue from an injury and other issues under his tail. We are working with that too. We started anti-inflammatory medications. Even with all the work ahead, the prognosis is a good one. I'll post another update in a week or so...

***Whiskey Update***

She also looked at Whiskey who had stopped eating 3 days earlier. He is my 31 year old Morgan. We believe it's an abscessed tooth and he is undergoing treatment now, he is nibbling his food this morning, so I think we have turned the corner. Thanks for all the good wishes, I know it helps.

We all appreciate your interest and the kindness you all have shown for our rescue animals.  Many thanks, from all of us at Cimarron.  www.quinnwildlifeart.com

This is a fun project for your tack room or any other table or surface you may want to cover.  Of course, my horses, Whiskey and Wilson want to help out, and offer their opinion. I hope you enjoy this cute video.  If you want to learn more about my books, art, and western lifestyle visit

Star's Fancy Footwork

Star's Fancy Footwork

Star had his feet trimmed and examined this morning. It was all good news, and so far, he will not need a special shoe for the foot he drags on the ground. If his toe wears too much, we may have to fit him with a corrective shoe in the future, but for now, he will be fine. The vet comes next week. Thank you so much for all you concern and support. We are much obliged.

Rescuing Star Update

Rescuing Star Update

Yesterday, I spent some time with Star, and we had our first training session in manners. He did very well, he is a quick learner and so far, has a " wants to please attitude". He did have trouble understanding how to back up, and not get into my personal space. He wants to be as close as possible. I start with short sessions (15-20 minutes) to avoid any frustration, and make training pleasant. The vet comes on Friday afternoon. More updates will be on the way. Thank you all for your good wishes and support. Star has a new life.

Rescuing Star

                                                          Rescuing Star

An opportunity presented itself, and we adopted an abused Arabian horse.  His name is Star, and he has and injured hip and drags his left hind leg.  The vet and the farrier are on the way, and I will be giving you updates on his progress.  I'm also planning a video of his story.  Here he is meeting Wilson.  Star is on the right side of the corral panel, he looks a lot like Wilson, and has a dear personality.

I'm very hopeful we can help him, even if I can't repair his leg, he will have a safe and happy home with us.

My Front Porch Friend

My front porch friend

This is the fellow who keeps eating my roses. When I sit on the porch near him he behaves, until I'm not looking, then he eats my flowers. I keep asking him to refrain from munching the blooms, but he is a cheeky guy!

The Great Greenhouse Tomato Takeover!

The Great Greenhouse Tomato Takeover!

I’m still taking advantage of every moment outside.  While I continue to struggle with the outdoor flowers, my plants in the greenhouse are thriving!  I have a tomato plant that is simply huge.  In this video, I will share why I think my green house was successful this year, plus a few facts you may be surprised to learn.

Our Labor Day- Labor of Love

Our Labor Day- Labor of Love

This front entry sign for our homestead is the result of our efforts this past Labor Day weekend. We designed, constructed and installed it. It was a labor of love and had been on our "to do" list for several years. I'm sure it will end up as a chapter in one of my books because we had some really funny experiences working on it. (It's heavier than it looks) 😉
In the past, my home was wherever life sent me, and that didn't change when I became a military wife and had a family. We lived in various houses and did our best to be happy. Now, for the first time, I have a home in the mountains of Montana. We call it Cimarron.

Nancy Quinn's Western Zen

Nancy Quinn's Western Zen

These are some inspirational thoughts I use to help myself. The landscapes here on the mountain are so lovely and uplifting, they often put me in a reflective mood.  I can always use a few extra moments of peace, and a deep relaxing breath.  I hope this video brings you the same kind of feelings.  I believe it's is another gift from Montana, and our life in the modern wild west.

Mercurial Mother Nature, Summer Hail Storm

The Summer Storm

I had to wonder, What the "hail" is this? I listened to the crashing and banging sounds on the roof our home. The frozen ice chunks fell viciously from the sky to the ground.

I was worried about the horses, they ran into the tree line instead of seeking shelter in the barn. When they emerged, they were covered with ice, but unharmed.

This is how much ice accumulated on the ground after the storm was over.  It was just another summer day in Montana.

The breathtaking Sunsets of Montana.

The Montana Skies

Visit our Montana mountain homestead, and view the gorgeous sunsets from our front porch.  Every night, I look to the sky for the ever-changing glorious patterns of light and shadow. Take 2 minutes, a deep breath, and enjoy these color drenched skies.

Cimarron is the name of the home featured in my books, "Go West, Young Woman!" and "Stay West, Young Woman!".

If you enjoyed this video, I suggest you watch Ep: 5 "Montana Sunsets" on my YouTube channel, Nancy Quinn-Life in the Wild West.

What's growing in the greenhouse?

What's growing in the greenhouse?

I receive a lot of questions about growing vegetables, and requests to see the greenhouse. It's hard to grow anything on our mountainside homestead in Montana.  This is our best year yet, and I'm constantly learning about growing food for our table.  I hope you enjoy this little tour of our built by hand greenhouse. You may pick up an innovative idea or two that will help you grow your own vegetables and flowers.

Our Wildlife Construction Crew

Meet Our Wildlife Construction Crew!

We have a lot of do-it-yourself outdoor building and maintenance projects to complete on the homestead during the summer.  See who stops in to "assist us" with our work.  Some of our "hired help" works for peanuts!
